common for your vehicle

It is common for your vehicle to get nicks, marks, and scratches. You will walk up to your car one day and wonder, “Where did that scratch come from?”

Some scratches are avoidable, and others not so much. Have you thought about what you can do to prevent scratches on your vehicle from happening? Understanding the common causes of car scratches can help you protect the exterior of your vehicle

this includes:

Washing and drying improperly

One of the most common causes of car scratches is incorrectly washing and drying your vehicle. A vehicle’s paint is very delicate and can be easily scratched.

You need to use the correct method for washing your car and use the right materials. Such as synthetic microfiber towels are designed for doing such tasks.

Automated car washes

Scratches are easily made through an automated car wash. The brushes gather dirt from other washed cars, acting against your paint like sandpaper on wood. The bristles will also wrap around parts of your vehicle and rip them off.

Road debris and rocks

Rocks and debris on the roads commonly cause scratches and chips on vehicles. Chips on your vehicle are usually caused by stones flung in the air by another car and hitting yours.

Road debris such as sticks can also damage your vehicle’s paint. Unfortunately, there isn’t much you can do to prevent this.

Car is rubbed against

The major cause of light paint scratches is caused by rubbing against your vehicle. These scratches may occur by placing a cup of coffee on the roof or even trying to open the door with your hands full. The scratches caused by this are typically light and can be easily fixed.

Accidents

You can’t get into a car accident without any scratches left; this is caused by the contact between two cars or any solid object. These scratches are often deep into the paint but can be fixed professionally.

Every car owner has to deal with scratches from time to time. This is why Kiwis auto body provides the services of scratch repairs managed with precision. All major and minor scratches are repaired by us.

Getting rid of car scratches

As mentioned, car scratches happen to every car owner, and you just need to know how to fix them. Here are some common methods to remove scratches from a vehicle:

The rubbing compounds

First, the area is cleaned with soapy car water and a microfibre cloth. A slight amount of rubbing compound is applied and rubbed into the scratched area using a circular motion with added pressure.

This process is repeated a few times and then washed and air-dried. This method is usually used for those small scratches.

Professional denting/painting for deep scratches

After the vehicle is washed thoroughly, any excess paint from the scratched area is removed using sandpaper. Then a primer is applied as the adherent medium for the paint, sanding between two or three times whilst waiting for it to dry.

A clear coat is applied with multiple layers and protected by sealing the paint using wax and polishing compounds.

A scratch repair kit

This is usually used for mild car scratches and can also be bought in stores. A buffing pad and solution for removing scratches are included within the kit. The surface should be washed to remove dust or debris and dried using a microfiber cloth.

A slight amount should be added to the buffing pad and rubbed onto the surface, and the excess should be wiped off and left to cure.
